CT - Grades PreK-2 Core Scientific Inquiry, Literacy and Numeracy

SCIENTIFIC LITERACY:  Scientific literacy includes speaking, listening, presenting, interpreting, reading and writing about science.
A INQ. 4 - Read, write, listen and speak about observations of the natural world.

K.1 - Objects have properties that can be observed and used to describe similarities and differences.
A1.  Use the senses and simple measuring tools, such as rulers and equal-arm balances, to observe common objects and sort them into groups based on size, weight, shape or color.

K.2 - Many different kinds of living things inhabit the Earth.
A4.  Describe the similarities and differences in the appearance and behaviors of plants, birds, fish, insects and mammals (including humans).

MA - Earth & Space Science, Grades PreK – 2

Earth’s Materials
1.  Recognize that water, rocks, soil, and living organisms are found on the earth’s surface.

The Sun as a Source of Light and Heat
4. Recognize that the sun supplies heat and light to the earth and is necessary for life.

MA – Life Science (Biology), Grades PreK – 2

Characteristics of Living Things
1.  Recognize that animals (including humans) and plants are living things that grow, reproduce, and need food, air, and water.

Evolution and Biodiversity
5.  Recognize that fossils provide us with information about living things that inhabited the earth years ago.

Living Things and their Environment
6.  Recognize that people and other animals interact with the environment through their senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.

8.  Identify the ways in which an organism’s habitat provides for its basic needs (plants require air, water, nutrients, and light; animals require food, water, air, and shelter).

NY – Standard 4 – Science (Elementary)

The Living Environment
1. Living things are both similar to and different from each other and nonliving things.

Students:

  • describe the life processes common to all living things.

 6. Plants and animals depend on each other and their physical environment.

Students:

  • describe how plants and animals, including humans, depend upon each other and the nonliving environment.
