Star Parties

Little Eyes

Our evening star parties are a perfect way to enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the night sky. We call our star parties Little Eyes on the Skies. While you might think that astronomy and star gazing is just for the “serious” our programs show you that astronomy is for everyone; especially for those with “little eyes” and a big curiosity about the universe.

You’ll learn what's up in the night sky, gaze thought our many telescopes, see special planetarium shows, and enjoy hands-on activities all lead by expert and experienced staff. Each program is focuses on a different topic, so no two events are the same. Our programs are perfect for individuals, families, and groups. We hope to see you here!

Here's what some have said about our Little Eyes on the Skies events:

…My two sons and I came last week for the Parade of Planets. I am so thrilled that you have begun these programs. I had been researching on the internet what astronomy groups were in the area and when they met, but hadn't taken any action. This program made it easy, especially since we are already members of the Science Center (The Children’s Museum) …

…Thank you so much for organizing these exciting events!...

…(the) show actually taught the night sky and object locations rather than just showing constellations with pretty graphic overlays…

…all I can state is that Jason’s interactivity with the audience was fantastic. With a diversely aged audience, the interaction at all levels of maturity was perfect including the Questions and Answers portion at the end…my hat is off to Jason…for being exceptionally talented in his knowledge and improvisation. It was a very enjoyable experience!...

…I want to thank and congratulate both you and the Science Center (The Children’s Museum) for providing a truly OUTSTANDING program. I must say that the Parade of Planets event was absolutely the best Science Center event that we have ever attended anywhere. The word “Perfection” comes to mind to describe the event…

Program Information

Do you still have the program if it is cloudy?

No matter the sky conditions, cloudy or clear, each program will run as scheduled. Unfortunately, we can’t control the weather so we always have plenty of in door activities and programs that are well worth seeing. Telescopes are set up all night in our courtyard with expert staff on hand to answer your questions. Staff is happy to find objects of interest, so just, ask and we’ll do our best to locate that celestial treasure for you.

Can I bring my own telescope?

For those who own telescopes you are more than welcome to bring it along, and we’ll be delighted to help you set it up. However, you must call in advance so we know that you are coming. We want to make sure that there is adequate staff on hand to assist you.

Are your programs for kids?

Kids are our specialty! Our programs are geared towards all ages and not just adults. If you have a young child who you’d like to give a view though a telescope, then we’re perfect. You need not stay for the entire night, but you do need to stay after sunset to best observe the sky. In summer, this might be a little later than your child’s normal bedtime. If possible, take an afternoon nap to prepare to stay up later. One look at Saturn and Jupiter through a telescope may be all that is needed to spark your child’s curiosity about the universe around him. Heck, he may even become a professional astronomer one day. Regardless, he will never forget his FIRST look through a telescope. No one ever does. It is a truly special moment. We just love to see kids’ reactions to seeing Saturn or Jupiter or the Moon through a telescope.

What if all I want is to look through the telescopes?

Sure you can do that! However, you would still need to purchase a ticket. Your ticket purchase helps to support this program. While we are not-for-profit and are here to educate, we still need to cover our basic operating costs. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Can groups come?

YES! Bring your scout or youth group. An evening with us will help scouts meet some of their requirements for Sky Search and The Night Sky badges. Groups must pre-register with us.

Ticket Cost?

While walk-ins are just fine, we encourage you to pre-register with us. To pre-register, call 860-231-2830, ext 44 or email events@thechildrensmuseumct.org. Ticket prices vary depending on the program. Members and groups of 10 or more get a discounted ticket price.
