Animal Care Department

The Animal Care Department at The Children’s Museum is proud to be home to a wonderful and diverse family of over sixty-five amazing individuals, representing more than forty native and exotic species from all around the world — including many special non-releasable animals native to Connecticut! Some of our ambassadors have come to us after difficult beginnings, with stories of neglect, abandonment, or medical challenges due to improper care. Others, like our native Connecticut ambassadors such as our Virginia Opossum and groundhog, are non-releasable because of permanent injuries or lasting effects, often caused by human-related activities, which means they can’t return to the wild.

Thanks to educational live animal programs and caring places like The Children’s Museum Group, these incredible animals have a safe and loving home. Our animal ambassadors help inspire understanding, curiosity, and respect for wildlife by sharing their stories through nature- and science-based education, and hands-on, up-close live animal encounters. All of this helps promote peaceful coexistence between people and the amazing creatures we share our world with.

Our dedicated animal care staff and volunteers work tirelessly to provide the best care possible, always following the latest, industry-leading practices to improve the lives and experiences of our animal residents. And it’s the kind generosity and support from our community that brings us closer to achieving this important mission every day.
