Go behind the scenes and learn what it takes to be an animal keeper. Work with the Wildlife Sanctuary Director, Animal Curators and volunteers. You will help feed, groom and learn general animal husbandry. Get a private demonstration and have your picture taken holding an animal at each session. The program is for ages 10 to 14 and is limited to 6 participants.
The Junior Keeper program has been a huge success and wildly popular. The sanctuary has had 40 keepers come through and learn what it takes to be an Animal Curator. Many of the participants have come back for Junior Keeper level 2 and a few keepers have been back numerous times. Plans are in place for a Junior Keeper level 3 for those keepers that just can’t get enough animal time. Favorite activities have been feeding snakes and cuddling the fennec fox!
This has been a great program for kids that are not quite old enough to volunteer. Many of the Junior Keepers have said they plan on volunteering when they are old enough. The minimum age to volunteer at The Wildlife Sanctuary is 15. The ages of the junior keepers ranges from 10 to 14 and is popular with both boys and girls.
The current session of Junior Keepers runs from February-May, with four hour long sessions meeting once a month.
